AAP Delhi Government announces transformational steps to promote sports in Delhi

  • Several new Stadium/Sports complexes to be opened to promote sports among all ages.
  • Grounds of Delhi Government Schools to be opened for academies/clubs/individuals to impart sports training to students.

The Delhi Government has taken major decisions towards broad basing of sports from grass root level. To make playing easier for all, the state government has ordered opening up of several stadiums/sports complexes; apart from this it has also been decided that academies/clubs/individuals will have access to government schools for sports promotion.

The Directorate of Education, Government of Delhi has decided to start the “Pay & Play Scheme” to promote sports among all ages. Under the scheme anyone can go the designated stadium/sports complexes to play the sports available in the said stadium/sports complex.

Membership for sports facilities is already available in Thyagraj Stadium, Ludlow Castle Sports Complex and Chhatrasal Stadium. However, Ludlow Castle Sports Complex has been excluded as it is already full with members.

The places of operations and sports disciplines covered are as follows:

The facilities will start from July 1, 2015 in the morning session from 6 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. The facilities would be free of cost for school students and disabled persons, while person’s upto 45-years of age would have to pay Rs 100/- per month per discipline. Persons above 45-years of age would be paying Rs 75/- per month per discipline and persons from the BPL category and Women would have to pay Rs 45/- per month per discipline. The department will target to register maximum number of interested persons under the scheme.

In another decision to encourage and promote sports, the Delhi Government has decided to open Delhi Government Schools for academies/clubs/individuals to impart training/coaching to student players of the particular school for free of cost. Simultaneously, they would also be allowed to train and coach a maximum number of 50-student players of nearby schools.

This decision of the government of Delhi was taken looking at the limited number of coaches available and the Physical Education teachers in the schools finding it tough to do justice with the school students looking their large numbers.

The games to be provided under this decision are Taekwondo, Karate, Judo, Table Tennis, Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Chess.

The Delhi Government will provide the academies/clubs/individuals access to the schools and requisite space in the school to impart coaching and training.

The academies/clubs/individuals will have to enroll constituency wise with the Directorate of Education after fulfilling the eligibility criterion set by the government. The academy/club/individuals would be responsible for the security and safety of the players.
