Delhi Govt. plants 8.4 lakh tree saplings in 2016-17 with unprecedented 60-70% survival in third party tree audit.

Delhi government reviews the status of plantation of 10 lakh saplings during this year

 

  • All greening agencies directed to conduct third party audits done
  • NDMC states third party audit shows 60% saplings survived last year

 

Environment and Forest Minister Mr Imran Hussain on Thursday reviewed the performance of all greening agencies across Delhi to strictly check the status of target of plantation of 10 lakh saplings in the national capital during the current year (2016-17) to check air pollution.

In the meeting attended by the officials of the Forest Department, Horticulture Wing of MCDs, NDMC, DDA, DSIIDC, PWD, Development Department, Irrigation and Flood Control Department & Parks and Gardens Society etc. It was informed by the greening agencies that they have so far completed plantation of 8.4 lakh saplings. 

All the agencies assured that they will meet the deadline of achieving the target allocated to them for the current year.

Mr Hussain said given the genuine concerns about levels of air pollution in Delhi, natural greenery will play an important role in mitigating the adverse impact of pollution. He also stressed that tree plantation play an important role in controlling air pollution.

The Minister emphasized that survival and maintenance of plantations be ensured by all the greening agencies and directed to conduct early independent audit of plantation by a third party. Director, NDMC informed that third party audit of the plantation in NDMC areas in previous year was conducted by the Indian Agriculture Research Institute, Pusa Road which showed 60 percent survival of saplings.

The DDA informed that they have conducted Intra-Departmental audit of tree plantation of previous years. DDA was advised to get third party audit on survival rate of old tree plantation through an independent agency.

Forest Department furnished third party audit report of departmental plantation raised from 2010-11 to 2013-14 conducted by the Agriculture Finance Corporation which shows survival of around 70%. Other agencies were also asked to conduct third party audit of previous year plantations within a month and submit a report in this regard.

The CEO, Delhi Parks and Garden Society, the Nodal Agency, to compile the data on tree census for the territory of Delhi expressed his concern that though the greening agencies have conducted a census of trees for their own areas, the census data has not been shared for compilation. 

The Minister desired that the agencies should furnish the data on the survival rate and health of the plantations done though third party audit and the complete tree census details within a month to the Nodal Agency. Forest Department was asked to monitor and regularly review the progress.
